The Bondage of the Will by Martin Luther

This excellent work of that eminent servant of God, Martin Luther — one of the noble Reformers is acknowledged to be one of the greatest, if not the greatest of Luther’s productions. Luther himself considered it his best publication.
(252 pages).

The Table-Talk of Martin Luther

Martin Luther's Table Talk is a compendium of excerpts taken from conversations with his students and colleagues, who furiously scribbled notes as he spoke. Reading them, it's easy to imagine all of them sitting around the table, eating and drinking and discussing issues of great concern to reformists. These excerpts are frequently anecdotal, highly opinionated, sometimes sublime, sometimes unsophisticated, occasionally brutal ... and always unequivocating. Right or wrong, Luther has his say. (239 pages).

A Treatise on Good Works

Truly good works, Luther writes, are not those done with the pretension of doing works pleasing to God, but those that flow from faith. He goes on to discuss good works in the context of each of the Ten Commandments. This treatise was prepared with the interests of Luther's congregation at Wittenberg in mind, but it found a much wider audience. (79 pages).

After many requests over the years for Bible Bulletin Board (BBB) collections and files being made available on a CD-ROM, we produced our first BBB-CD in December 1998.  In the past seven plus years we have sent out many thousands of copies of the BBB-CD, all over the world.  Over the years we kept adding more files and resources nearly every month until the BBB-CD was maxing out near 700 MB of data.  We feel the need is still out there for a very low-cost resource on CDs that can be used anywhere, with or without an internet connection. Thus we are happy to announce the new Dual CD BBB-CD, Version 4.1, which contains all the files that have taken over 21 years to compile.

ow, we have offer the same files that are available on the dual CDs (BBB-CD) on a single DVD.

The new dual-CD BBB-CD comes in an attractive DVD-type case and now has one CD (CD #1) with Sermons and Articles, and the other CD (CD #2) has the very valuable Biblical References and Resources.  The menu system is much improved to quickly locate the Resources and References you desire.  The new menu system on CD #2 defaults to a "quick-launch" of each item.  There is also an "extended" menu display just one click away.

The new BBB-DVD is a single DVD in an indestructible case with all the menu features of the BBB-CD.

Version 4.1 Dual BBB-CD or the BBB-DVD are priced at $14.95 and all updates to the Dual BBB-CD or BBB-DVD are only $7.50 (Note: each BBB-CD and BBB-DVD update is a complete BBB-CD or BBB-DVD, with all the latest files included, and you are free to give your previous BBB-CDs or BBB-DVD away to your friends or neighbors.  Any previous owner of any BBB-CD or a BBB-DVD is eligible for the update price of only $7.50 and can upgrade to either the BBB-CD or the BBB-DVD--their choice).

We have free shipping of the BBB-CDs and BBB-DVDs to the US, Canada, and Mexico.  (Overseas shipping is a flat fee of $5.00 for any size order and will ship Air Mail).

Oh yes, one more thing...the Dual-CD BBB-CD and the BBB-DVD is both PC and MAC Compatible!

Now, you can have BBB available wherever you are without having to go online.  Great for sermon preparation, having many sermons and articles of Spurgeon, J. C. Ryle and others at your fingertips.  You will also have the database of verses on Bible People and Topics.  When you travel, be sure to take the BBB-CDs or the BBB-DVD along with your laptop.  It also saves connect time charges for those without free access to the Internet. Now, since the BBB-CD and the BBB-DVD have additional Bible Study software included, these CDs or DVD will make wonderful gifts for Missionaries who have limited and costly access to Internet.

Easy to use interface, in fact, you will think that you are online.  Simply start your Internet browser or Windows Explorer and you are taken to the home page of BBB-CD or the BBB-DVD.  The familiar menu will allow you to select any file, view it, print it, search it, and copy it.  MAC users simply click on the BBB-CD or BBB-DVD icon on desktop (screen).

Having BBB on CD or a DVD will allow you to have all the files available without having to store them on your hard drive, taking up valuable space--simply keep the BBB-CD handy as a reference source.  However, you can freely copy the entire contents of the CDs or the DVDs to your hard drive if you so wish--even onto a USB Drive!

Both the BBB-CD and the BBB-DVD have all the John MacArthur "links" to his files on the BBB website.  We are still restricted by copyright from having the actual files on the CD/DVD, however we do have permission to maintain all the files on our BBB website.  Adding the "links only" MacArthur section to the CD/DVD will allow the users to "know" what MacArthur files are currently available on BBB.  We feel this will be a great aid in Bible Study and sermon preparation.  The actual MacArthur files are not on the CD/DVD, but can be viewed/downloaded by simply going online and clicking on the links.

The New Life

Words of God for Young Disciples of Christ

by
Andrew Murray
(1828-1917)

In communications with young converts, I have very frequently longed for a suitable book in which the most important truths that they have need of for the New Life should be briefly and simply set forth.  I could not find anything that entirely corresponded to what I desired.  I have been permitted to speak with so many who professed to have found the Lord, and who were, nevertheless, still very weak in knowledge and faith, this want was felt by me still more keenly.  In the course of my journey, I felt myself pressed to take the pen in hand.  Under a vivid impression of the infirmities and the perverted thoughts concerning the New Life, with which, as was manifest to me from conversations I had with them, almost all young Christians have to wrestle, I wished, in some words of instruction and encouragement, to let them see what a glorious life of power and joy is prepared for them in their Lord Jesus, and how simple the way is to enjoy all this blessing.

Imitation of Christ
by

Thomas Á Kempis
(1380-1471)

For five hundred years, this gentle book, filled with the spirit of the love of God, has brought understanding and comfort to millions of readers in over fifty languages, and provided them with a source of heart-felt personal prayer. These meditations on the life and teachings of Jesus, written in times even more troubled and dangerous than our own, have become second only to the Bible as a guide and inspiration. Á Kempis is ascetic in his approach to and exposition of the life of Christ. He explores the nature of spirituality with clarity, and writes of the beauty of Christ's life with enriching simplicity.

II. Structure of the New Testament Church.

III. New Testament Church Order.

The book has one more part, which I will be adding in the future.

IV. Application of New testament Missionary Principles.

The entire book has 530 pages, and I have provided the first 390 pages. (See complete description of this book below).

A Very Special Book

The New Testament Order for Church and Missionary
by
Alexander Hay

I have provided Parts I, II, and III  of the book:

I. The New Testament Example.

II. Structure of the New Testament Church.

III. New Testament Church Order.

The book has one more part, which I will be adding in the coming months.

IV. Application of New Testament Missionary Principles.

The entire book has 530 pages, and I have provided the first 390 pages.

You ask, "What makes this book so special?" Well, in an interview of John MacArthur a few years ago, he was asked a question concerning his goals for Grace Community Church, since coming there almost 35 years ago.  John's answer, included a reference to this special book, The New Testament Order for Church and Missionary by Alex Hay. He said that he obtained a copy of this book very early in his ministry, and that it had a great influence on his goals, because it outlined the basic structure and the ministry of the early church, which assisted him in his quest to bring Grace Community Church into agreement with the biblical structure and order of the New Testament Church.

I recently obtained a copy of this “out-of-print” book and saw in it some very clear definitions concerning the structure and order of the early church.  I realized, as I read it, that it was revealing that the early church was very different than the church of the author’s time (1947), and most certainly of our times today.  I believe it is a very critical book that should be read by every pastor, elder, deacon, and member of the church today.

NOTE: I have obtained a number of new copies of this out-of-print book.  They are available for purchase at www.gospelgems.com (see link on bottom of home page.)

Here is an excerpt from the Preface of the book, which will give an indication of the worth of this study,

The first draft of the manuscript of this book was written seventeen years ago [1930], not with any thought of publication, but because we felt the need of setting down in order for our own benefit the principles and methods of church-planting that we were seeking to discover and put into practice. The years that have followed have brought increased understanding and knowledge….”

“The matter is of such importance and the Scriptural pattern has been so obscured by centuries of ecclesiasticism that we have found it necessary to deal thoroughly with the Scriptural evidence and its significance. Reference is made also to the historical evidence, which so fully supports the teaching of Scripture.

We do not offer this study as a textbook but simply as a statement of the experiences and guidance which the Lord has given. The only authoritative and complete textbook on church order and missionary procedure is God's Word. Our desire is to point to that Word.”

When we began our ministry in the foreign field thirty years ago [1917 we had no thought of questioning the generally accepted methods of missionary work. It was only when face to face with the facts and problems of the work that there began to grow upon us a sense of disappointment and frustration as we saw the slowness of progress and the evident lack of power in the churches established.

This caused us to turn to God's Word to study the work of the first church-planters. There we could find no valid reason why we should not experience the same power of the Holy Spirit today as they did then. We do not mean the miraculous manifestations of the Spirit's power but the evidence of His presence in converts and churches. What we did discover was that the methods we were employing in our work were not those used by the New Testament Evangelists or by our Lord and that the
pattern of our churches differed greatly from theirs.

At first we endeavored to apply what seemed to be the most important of the New Testament methods. This we tried for several years. The New Testament way always brought increased blessing and spiritual power, but it became very evident that what still remained of the modern method was as clay mixed with the iron and a continual source of weakness and defeat.

It was no easy matter to discern what was really of the modern method and not in accord with the principles of the Scriptural pattern. We are so accustomed to certain practices and ways of doing things that it may take time to realize that they are based on principles contrary to the way in which the Spirit desires to work. Moreover, there is need for great caution. So often those who have sought to return, to the New Testament way have stumbled into ruts and exaggerations and so strayed from the way.

Many of God's servants throughout the world are seeking to discover this way. There is, indeed, a widespread work of the Holy Spirit leading back to the divinely revealed order. This call of the Spirit is insistent and unmistakable. There has been a departing from the way of power and He would have us return, that the fullness of the Lord's power may be released again. Why should we be satisfied with only a very partial fulfillment of the promises of power and blessing? Why should we bow to the power of the forces of evil when we follow One to Whom has been given all power in Heaven and on earth?

Considerable attention is given in this study to the spiritual principles involved. We have found that it is imperative to do so. The New Testament method is as dead as any other method if it is applied without the guidance and power of the Spirit Who alone gives it life. It is really not a method but a spiritual order—the order in which Christ wishes to carry on His work through the Church by the power of His Spirit.” – Alexander Hay (1947).

1. The "95 Theses"
2. "To the Nobility of the German Nation"

33 Sermons by Charles Haddon Spurgeon on the Book of Proverbs.

These are some of the best sermons that he ever preached.  We now have a total of 1,254 Spurgeon Sermon transcripts on this BBB-CD

Three more of John Owen's (1616-1683)
most excellent works:

1. Two Short Catechisms: Great to use to teach children and new believers.

The Two Short Catechisms were designed to help and instruct the members of John Owen’s congregation at Fordham. According to Owen himself, they represent the substance of the teaching he gave in his regular preaching ministry.

2. Temptations: The Nature and power of them; the danger of them; the means of preventing them.

John Owen was essentially a pastoral theologian, and in his best writings, his pastoral concern and acute doctrinal instinct are inseparable. Temptations, an exposition of Jesus’ words ‘Watch and pray, lest ye enter into temptation,’ describes the nature of entering into temptation, and offers valuable teaching on watching against it.

3. Mortification of Sin in Believers: The necessity, nature, and means of it.

John Owen was essentially a pastoral theologian, and in his best writings, his pastoral concern and acute doctrinal instinct are inseparable. The Mortification of Sin, the substance of a series of addresses on Romans viii. 13, provides teaching in a vital but neglected aspect of Christianity. Owen takes up many of the questions that occur to every believer in the battle against sin.

"Religious Affections"
by
Jonathan Edwards
(1703-1758)

Jonathan Edwards, the central figure in New England's first Great Awakening, offers here his most detailed description of the signs--true and false--of revival, while highlighting the role truly balanced emotions play within the Christian life. He takes a long, hard look at the evidence of true conversion--the fruit that comes from living like Christ. It is not enough to do "Christian" things--for without an authentic, selfless service motivated by the Holy Spirit, our works are empty.

This work in published form is a book of 515 pages (only 378 pages are actually Edwards' text which is included here) and it retails for $16.99 at Amazon.com and is discounted to $11.55 (plus shipping). It is yours as part of the BBB-CD.

"Systematic Theology"
(Three Volume Set)

by

Charles Hodges

A comprehensive theological treatment by one of the greatest nineteenth-century Princeton theologians. Originally published 1871-73 (reprinted 1940).

The magnum opus of one of America's most prominent theologians offers an in-depth exploration of theology, anthropology, soteriology, and eschatology. This monumental work, now a standard for theological students, was written while Hodge served as a professor at Princeton, where he permanently influenced American Christianity as a teacher, preacher, and exegete. Includes a comprehensive index.

(Note: This three-volume set in a hardcover edition list for $100 in bookstores, and the best web price is $63 plus shipping, but it is included on this CD).

Commenting and Commentaries

by

C. H. Spurgeon

Two Lectures (1890) Addressed to the students of The Pastors’ College, Metropolitan Tabernacle,

This is the second of a series of works useful to Students and Ministers prepared by Mr. Spurgeon. The first volume is “Lectures to my Students: a Selection from Addresses delivered to the Students of the Pastors’ College, Metropolitan Tabernacle”. It is hoped that The College Series may render efficient service to preachers of the gospel. Friends who appreciate the books will greatly oblige by making them known to others. The same motive which prompted the author to write, leads him to desire a large circle of readers.

Hymn Writers of the Church

Psalms and Hymns of Isaac Watts

The School of Calvary or Sharing His Suffering

Original edition printed by James Clarke And Company, London, In 1911

Torrey's New Topical Textbook

A topical textbook of the Bible is one of the chief requisites of all Christian workers. The pulpit ministry of preachers and the class work of teachers is largely, if not overwhelmingly, topical. Through all homilies, discussions and expositions of Scripture the topical idea prevails. In our conversations on religious subjects we are in the habit of discussing topically. It is because, whether we are subjective or objective in our research and thinking in Christian truth, we are inescapably topical. D. L. Moody said if there were only one book he could own other than his Bible, it would be "The New Topical Textbook." In this book you can find twenty thousand topics and sub-topics, thirty thousand Bible references, with methods of Bible study by Dr. R. A. Torrey.

The Freedom of the Will

by

Jonathan Edwards

This book contains a detailed inquiry into the prevailing theory regarding the freedom of the will and human determinism.  First published in 1754. This is probably one of the most important theological works ever published in America.  Edwards refutes the false doctrine that says, "Human beings have the ability to be righteous and thus saved by the exercise of their own free will."  This book in Hardcover sells for $27.95 at Amazon.com and has 348 pages, but is included, in its entirety on the BBB-CD.

Commentary on Paul's Epistle to the Galatians
by
Martin Luther
(1483-1546)

The importance of this Commentary on Galatians for the history of Protestantism is very great. It presents like no other of Luther’s writings the central thought of Christianity, the justification of the sinner for the sake of Christ’s merits alone. We have permitted in the final revision of the manuscript many a passage to stand which seemed weak and ineffectual when compared with the trumpet tones of the Latin original. But the essence of Luther’s lectures is there. May the reader accept with indulgence where in this translation we have gone too far in modernizing Luther’s expression—making him “talk American.”

John Owen
(1616-1683)

Brief Declaration and Vindication of the Doctrine of the Trinity

Few of Owen’s treatises have been more extensively circulated and generally useful than his Brief Declaration and Vindication of the Doctrine of the Trinity. At the time when the treatise was published, the momentous doctrines of the Trinity and the Atonement were violently assailed; but it was not so much for the refutation of opponents as for “the edification and establishment of the plain Christian,” that our author composed the following little work. The reader will find in it traces of that deep and familiar acquaintance with opposing views, and with the highest theology involved in the questions which might be expected from Dr Owen on a subject which he seems to have studied with peculiar industry and research.

Doctrine of Justification by Faith

Owen’s masterly account of justification by faith is distinguished from the two other classical 17th-century English treatises on this subject (those of Downame and Davenant) by its non-speculative, non-scholastic character and its dominating pastoral concern. The resurgent Roman challenge, and current Protestant confusion, obliged Owen to write controversially at certain points, but the core of his discourse is straightforward biblical exposition, massive, fresh, compelling and practical. Of all the many Puritan treatments of justification, Owen’s is without doubt the richest.

Gospel Grounds and Evidences of the Faith of God's Elect

What are the evidences on which the elect of God, in any process of self-scrutiny, may ascertain the reality of their own faith? Ascribing to faith all the importance which is due to it as the instrumental cause of justification, John Owen suspends the entire question of the genuineness of conversion upon the existence of a fourfold development or operation of that gracious principle in the hearts of all who may be anxious to discover whether they have been really quickened and born of God.

The Introduction to the New Testament
by
Louis Berkhof

This work on New Testament Introduction is the result of labor done in and for the class-room, and is primarily intended for my own students. It is not and does not pretend to be a work of original research, but depends in a large measure on the labors of such men as Davidson, Reuss, Weiss, Westcott, Lightfoot, Godet, Holtzmann, Julicher, Zahn, e. a. The indebtedness to these will be evident from its pages.

It has been my constant endeavor in writing this book, to make it a work that would introduce the students to the books of the New Testament, as they have in fact been transmitted to the Church, and not as some critic or other would have them be. Hence critical questions, though not disregarded, do not loom as large on its pages as they often do in works on Introduction; the positive constructive element has a decided precedence over the apologetic; and the human factor that operated in the origin and composition of the Scriptures, is not studied to the neglect of the divine.

A limited number of copies was printed, partly in deference to the expressed wish of some of my present and past students, and partly because I desire to use it as a text-book in the future, there being none of the smaller works on Introduction, such as those of Dods, Pullan, Kerr, Barth, Peake e. a., however excellent some of them may be in their own way, that gave me what I desired. If the book may in some small measure be instrumental in leading others to a greater appreciation and an ever better understanding of the New Testament writings, I shall be very grateful indeed.

L. BERKHOF.

Grand Rapids, Mich., November 30, 1915.

The Diary of David Brainerd

Missionary to the American Indians in New York, New Jersey, and eastern Pennsylvania. Born in Connecticut in 1718, he died of tuberculosis at the age of twenty-nine in 1747. Jonathan Edwards preached the funeral sermon and published the diary which David had kept.

His Diary is filled with ministries and miracles. The Diary of David Brainerd ought to be read -- and read often -- by God's people. It will do something for you spiritually. You will be convicted, challenged, changed, charged. It has had life-transforming effect upon many, motivating them to become missionaries, evangelists, preachers, people of prayer and power with God.

Brainerd's ministry to the Indians was contemporary with Wesley, Whitefield and Edwards as they ministered to the English-speaking people during the period called in English and American history, the "Great Awakening." Brainerd's centuries-spanning influence for revival is positive proof God can and will use any vessel, no matter how fragile and frail, if it is only sold out to souls and the Savior!

"The Works of Jonathan Edwards"

Widely recognized as a great theologian, an influential preacher and a prolific writer, Jonathan Edwards played a prominent role in helping to spark the spirit of revivalism known as the Great Awakening in the eighteenth-century America. Edwards' sermons, while intellectually engaging, were also accessible to the common people and often generated highly emotional responses. His foremost desire was to help people transform from mere believers in Christian doctrine to converted Christians who were moved to action by the principles of their belief.

This two-volume collection of Edwards' works features important sermons of the Great Awakening as well as Edwards' memoirs and other essays. First published in 1834, here is what makes this new edition of The Works of Jonathan Edwards the best available:

More complete. This edition contains all matter included in the first collected American edition, various original extracts from the diary and papers of Edwards, several smaller pieces printed originally in a separate form, and a memoir by descendant Sereno E. Dwight.

For anyone interested in the roots of Christianity and revival in colonial America, The Works of Jonathan Edwards is a fundamental resource.

[Note: This two volume set in hardcover lists for $120 in stores, and the best street price is currently at $85]

"The Complete Works of Josephus"

"A classic! Valuable as a guide to the study of the Old Testament and helpful in understanding the history of the Jewish people."--Cyril J. Barber (The Minister's Library).

No source, other than the Bible itself, provides more relevant information on the first century than the works of Flavius Josephus.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon: A Biography
(20 Chapters)

C. H. Spurgeon was to nineteenth-century England what D. L Moody was to America. Although Spurgeon never attended theological school, by the age of twenty-one he was the most popular preacher in London. He preached to crowds of ten thousand at Exeter Hall and the Surrey Music Hall. Then when the Metropolitan Tabernacle was built, thousands gathered every Sunday for over forty years to hear his lively sermons. In addition to his regular pastoral duties, he founded Sunday schools, churches, an orphanage, and the Pastor's College. He edited a monthly church magazine and promoted literature distribution. Sincerely and straightforwardly he denounced error both in the Church of England and among his own Baptists. An ardent evangelical, he deplored the trend of the day toward biblical criticism. This warm, fascinating story enduringly records Spurgeon's character and focuses light on different aspects of the man. The result is a lifelike picture of Spurgeon as he lived and labored for the Lord he loved.  Originally published in 1920.

THE REFORMED PASTOR
(The entire Book)

by Richard Baxter

Is a most extraordinary performance, and should be read by every young minister, before he takes a people under his stated care; and, I think, the practical part of it reviewed every three or four years; for nothing would have a greater tendency to awaken the spirit of a minister to that zeal in his work, for want of which many good men are but shadows of what (by the blessing of God) they might be, if the maxims and measures laid down in that incomparable Treatise were strenuously pursued.

Now you can search the entire BBB-CD by Scripture Verse.  This search will reveal any sermon, article, or study guide available that matches the Scripture Verse.  An added feature of this search is that although we are currently restricted from including any of the John MacArthur files on the BBB-CD, we have included the "links" to the files, so the user would know that John MacArthur has a file for the desired Scripture.  The MacArthur files are still available from the BBB website, so you can simply go online and click the MacArthur link on the BBB-CD and it will take you right to the file.

The Treasury of David

Spurgeon's Classic Commentary
on "each" of the 150 Psalms

"A classic in it's field. Richly rewarding, deeply devotional and pleasingly relevant. Provides not only the thoughts of the great 'Prince of Preachers' of the 19th century, but also an abundance of quotations taken from the writings of those who have preceded him in the ministry of the Word."--Cyril J. Barber, author of "The Minister's Library"

This work was first published in weekly installments over a twenty-year span in the London Metropolitan Tabernacle's periodical, The Sword and the Trowel. Completed sections were released volume by volume, until the seventh and final volume was released in 1885. Within a decade more than 120,000 sets had been sold. Spurgeon's wife said that if Spurgeon had never written any other work, this would have been a permanent literary memorial. The work remains in print today in several editions.

In His Steps
(30 Chapters)

Read the Christian classic by Charles M. Sheldon that sparked the WWJD? phenomenon! Discover what happens when first a pastor, then his church, pledges to ask one simple question before doing anything: "What would Jesus do?" When you see how lives are transformed, you'll be inspired to ask the same question before everything you do!

An all-time best-seller, this timeless classic, written at the turn of century, has blessed millions of people who have asked the vital question, "What does it really mean to be a Christian?" Sheldon, as a young minister, and before becoming editor of the Christian HERALD, disguised himself as an unemployed printer and tramped the city streets with others in that same plight. He was shocked by the indifference of the Christian community. From that experience he wrote this novel.

***I have received some questions as to why I would include a book on the latest BBB-CD/DVD by a "Catholic" author?  The book, "The Imitation of Christ" by Thomas Á Kempis (1380-1471) was added due to its value of providing examples of meditations on the life and teachings of Jesus Christ.

As a former member of the Roman Catholic Church (RCC), I am completely aware of the false gospel of works in the Catholic Church, and yet I do know that it is possible that there have been and are today, some in that false religion who truly were and are saved, but not through the the false gospel of the RCC.  Rather they have, like Martin Luther, discovered as they meditated on Christ, through their own private study of the scriptures, come to a saving knowledge of Christ.  They may have stayed in the Catholic Church, but the were no longer "Catholics."

Martin Luther, the father of the Protestant Reformation, a former Catholic Priest, still held on to some false RCC doctrines after his salvation, for example, infant baptism, but he was no less a true believer.

The book I added has been recognized, over the years, as having value to the Christian's pursuit of Christ.  As always, we take all writings of all men, and test them against the scriptures, and where they differ, we ignore those teachings.

For example of the value of this classic work I offer these quotes by John MacArthur, Charles Spurgeon, and J. C. Ryle,

J. C. Ryle (1816-1900) “It is a sorrowful thought that Christ's example should be so little remembered or looked at in these latter days. It is a striking illustration of man's mental littleness and inability to grasp more than a portion of the truth. You may lay your hand on a hundred books which profess to grapple with points of doctrine, before you will find one which handles the mighty subject of the true pattern of Christian practice. Yet no part of God's truth can ever be neglected without the Church taking damages; and I believe the Church has suffered greatly by neglecting the point of which I now speak. The famous book of Thomas a Kempis may have many defects, I have no doubt, and to some it is even mischievous. But I am sure it would be well if we had many more Christlike Christian men and women, who strive at home and abroad to imitate Christ.” (http://www.biblebb.com/files/ryle/looking_unto_jesus.htm)

John MacArthur  – “Some people say, "Spiritual growth belongs to the spiritual giants." I have read Imitation of Christ by the fifteenth century saint Thomas a` Kempis. I have read about mystics who knelt and prayed for eight to ten hours and wore out holes in the wood floors. I have read about Robert Murray McCheyne, who would stand at his pulpit and great floods of tears would soil the pages of his Bible and stain the wood of his pulpit. I have read Power Through Prayer by E. M. Bounds. He was so consumed with prayer that he would spend hour upon hour in prayer. And I would think, "It's useless! I will never reach that level." But God uses each of us in different ways. Spiritual growth is not some mystical thing for someone who is in some other spiritual plane. Spiritual growth is very simple. It is a matter of obedience, loving the Lord, praying, praising, believing, confessing sin, proclaiming the Word, bearing fruit, and winning people to Christ. It is that simple. Those are the elements you need in your life in order to mature. And the sooner you focus on those simple basics the sooner you are going to see the Spirit of God changing you into the image of Christ, from one level of glory to the next level of glory.” (http://www.biblebb.com/files/MAC/1389.htm).

John MacArthur  – “It's always been this way and I don't really know why...why people are motivated the way they're motivated. I don't know why I'm motivated the way I am. I remember as a very young boy, I was in junior high and I had this kind of aching down inside of me to understand the Bible. My father preached the Bible faithfully. But that was seemingly not enough for me. I just had this...this aching inside for something that I thought was there I hadn't yet known. And I was about in junior high. I was a typical junior-high guy, I was in trouble like everybody else. But God had planted something in my heart. And somebody gave me a book called Imitation of Life by Thomas a Kempis which is really a mystical book. But I began to read it, imagine a junior-high kid getting a hold of that. And I started reading it and it took me to depths of contemplation about God that I had really never ever seen. And then somebody gave me a book by E.M. Bounds, you know that book on prayer. And it talks about people wearing holes in wooden floors with their knees and that kind of thing, in hungering for God. And I'm this kid reading these mystical things and wondering what kind of depth of understanding of God these people had. I have come to know that not all that was going on in these mystical approaches was necessarily valid but that's what captivated me.” (http://www.biblebb.com/files/MAC/gty72.htm)

Charles Spurgeon (1834-1892) – “You that are scholars, remember Cranmer and Ridley; the former learned the New Testament by heart in his journey to Rome, the latter in Pembroke hall walks in Cambridge. Remember what is said of Thomas a Kempis, — that he found rest nowhere nisi in angulo, cum libello, but in a corner with this Book in his hand. And what is said of Beza, — that when he was above fourscore years old he could say perfectly by heart any Greek chapter in Paul's Epistles.”

"Thy ministers can pronounce the words, but cannot impart the spirit; they may entertain the fancy with the charms of eloquence, but if thou art silent they do not inflame the heart. They administer the letter, but thou openest the sense; they utter the mystery, but you reveal its meaning; they point out the way of life, but you bestow strength to walk in it; they water, but thou givest the increase. Therefore do thou, O Lord, my God, Eternal Truth! speak to my soul! lest, being outwardly warmed, but not inwardly quickened, I die, and be found unfruitful. "Speak, Lord, for thy servant heareth." "Thou only hast the words of eternal life." — Thomas a Kempis, 1380-1471. (http://www.biblebb.com/files/spurgeon/TOD/chstp119.htm)
