COWARDICE

GEN 12:11  As he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, "I 
know what a beautiful woman you are.

12  When the Egyptians see you, they will say, 'This is his wife.' Then 
they will kill me but will let you live.

13  Say you are my sister, so that I will be treated well for your sake and 
my life will be spared because of you."

26:7  When the men of that place asked him about his wife, he said, "She is 
my sister," because he was afraid to say, "She is my wife." He thought, 
"The men of this place might kill me on account of Rebekah, because she is 
beautiful."

31:31  Jacob answered Laban, "I was afraid, because I thought you would 
take your daughters away from me by force.

EXO 32:22  "Do not be angry, my lord," Aaron answered. "You know how prone 
these people are to evil.

23  They said to me, 'Make us gods who will go before us. As for this 
fellow Moses who brought us up out of Egypt, we don't know what has 
happened to him.'

24  So I told them, 'Whoever has any gold jewelry, take it off.' Then they 
gave me the gold, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf!"

LEV 26:36  "'As for those of you who are left, I will make their hearts so 
fearful in the lands of their enemies that the sound of a windblown leaf 
will put them to flight. They will run as though fleeing from the sword, 
and they will fall, even though no one is pursuing them.

37  They will stumble over one another as though fleeing from the sword, 
even though no one is pursuing them. So you will not be able to stand 
before your enemies.

NUM 13:28  But the people who live there are powerful, and the cities are 
fortified and very large. We even saw descendants of Anak there.

31  But the men who had gone up with him said, "We can't attack those 
people; they are stronger than we are."

32  And they spread among the Israelites a bad report about the land they 
had explored. They said, "The land we explored devours those living in it. 
All the people we saw there are of great size.

33  We saw the Nephilim there (the descendants of Anak come from the 
Nephilim). We seemed like grasshoppers in our own eyes, and we looked the 
same to them."

14:1  That night all the people of the community raised their voices and 
wept aloud.

2  All the Israelites grumbled against Moses and Aaron, and the whole 
assembly said to them, "If only we had died in Egypt! Or in this desert!

3  Why is the LORD bringing us to this land only to let us fall by the 
sword? Our wives and children will be taken as plunder. Wouldn't it be 
better for us to go back to Egypt?"

4  And they said to each other, "We should choose a leader and go back to 
Egypt."

5  Then Moses and Aaron fell facedown in front of the whole Israelite 
assembly gathered there.

DEU 1:26  But you were unwilling to go up; you rebelled against the command 
of the LORD your God.

27  You grumbled in your tents and said, "The LORD hates us; so he brought 
us out of Egypt to deliver us into the hands of the Amorites to destroy us.

28  Where can we go? Our brothers have made us lose heart. They say, 'The 
people are stronger and taller than we are; the cities are large, with 
walls up to the sky. We even saw the Anakites there.'"

20:8  Then the officers shall add, "Is any man afraid or fainthearted? Let 
him go home so that his brothers will not become disheartened too."

32:30  How could one man chase a thousand, or two put ten thousand to 
flight, unless their Rock had sold them, unless the LORD had given them up?

JOS 2:11  When we heard of it, our hearts melted and everyone's courage 
failed because of you, for the LORD your God is God in heaven above and on 
the earth below.

5:1  Now when all the Amorite kings west of the Jordan and all the 
Canaanite kings along the coast heard how the LORD had dried up the Jordan 
before the Israelites until we had crossed over, their hearts melted and 
they no longer had the courage to face the Israelites.

7:5  who killed about thirty-six of them. They chased the Israelites from 
the city gate as far as the stone quarries and struck them down on the 
slopes. At this the hearts of the people melted and became like water.

10:16  Now the five kings had fled and hidden in the cave at Makkedah.

23:10  One of you routs a thousand, because the LORD your God fights for 
you, just as he promised.

JDG 7:3  announce now to the people, 'Anyone who trembles with fear may 
turn back and leave Mount Gilead.'" So twenty-two thousand men left, while 
ten thousand remained.

1SA 13:6  When the men of Israel saw that their situation was critical and 
that their army was hard pressed, they hid in caves and thickets, among the 
rocks, and in pits and cisterns.

7  Some Hebrews even crossed the Jordan to the land of Gad and Gilead. Saul 
remained at Gilgal, and all the troops with him were quaking with fear.

16:2  But Samuel said, "How can I go? Saul will hear about it and kill me." 
The LORD said, "Take a heifer with you and say, 'I have come to sacrifice 
to the LORD.'

17:24  When the Israelites saw the man, they all ran from him in great 
fear.

2SA 15:13  A messenger came and told David, "The hearts of the men of 
Israel are with Absalom."

14  Then David said to all his officials who were with him in Jerusalem, 
"Come! We must flee, or none of us will escape from Absalom. We must leave 
immediately, or he will move quickly to overtake us and bring ruin upon us 
and put the city to the sword."

15  The king's officials answered him, "Your servants are ready to do 
whatever our lord the king chooses."

16  The king set out, with his entire household following him; but he left 
ten concubines to take care of the palace.

17  So the king set out, with all the people following him, and they halted 
at a place some distance away.

JOB 15:24  Distress and anguish fill him with terror; they overwhelm him, 
like a king poised to attack,

18:11  Terrors startle him on every side and dog his every step.

PSA 78:9  The men of Ephraim, though armed with bows, turned back on the 
day of battle;

PRO 28:1  The wicked man flees though no one pursues, but the righteous are 
as bold as a lion.

29:25  Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trusts in the LORD 
is kept safe.

ISA 51:12  "I, even I, am he who comforts you. Who are you that you fear 
mortal men, the sons of men, who are but grass,

13  that you forget the LORD your Maker, who stretched out the heavens and 
laid the foundations of the earth, that you live in constant terror every 
day because of the wrath of the oppressor, who is bent on destruction? For 
where is the wrath of the oppressor?

MAT 8:26  He replied, "You of little faith, why are you so afraid?" Then he 
got up and rebuked the winds and the waves, and it was completely calm.

14:25  During the fourth watch of the night Jesus went out to them, walking 
on the lake.

26:56  But this has all taken place that the writings of the prophets might 
be fulfilled." Then all the disciples deserted him and fled.

69  Now Peter was sitting out in the courtyard, and a servant girl came to 
him. "You also were with Jesus of Galilee," she said.

70  But he denied it before them all. "I don't know what you're talking 
about," he said.

71  Then he went out to the gateway, where another girl saw him and said to 
the people there, "This fellow was with Jesus of Nazareth."

72  He denied it again, with an oath: "I don't know the man!"

73  After a little while, those standing there went up to Peter and said, 
"Surely you are one of them, for your accent gives you away."

74  Then he began to call down curses on himself and he swore to them, "I 
don't know the man!" Immediately a rooster crowed.

28:4  The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead 
men.

MAR 4:38  Jesus was in the stern, sleeping on a cushion. The disciples woke 
him and said to him, "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?"

6:50  because they all saw him and were terrified. Immediately he spoke to 
them and said, "Take courage! It is I. Don't be afraid."

14:66  While Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of 
the high priest came by.

67  When she saw Peter warming himself, she looked closely at him. "You 
also were with that Nazarene, Jesus," she said.

68  But he denied it. "I don't know or understand what you're talking 
about," he said, and went out into the entryway.

69  When the servant girl saw him there, she said again to those standing 
around, "This fellow is one of them."

70  Again he denied it. After a little while, those standing near said to 
Peter, "Surely you are one of them, for you are a Galilean."

71  He began to call down curses on himself, and he swore to them, "I don't 
know this man you're talking about."

72  Immediately the rooster crowed the second time. Then Peter remembered 
the word Jesus had spoken to him: "Before the rooster crows twice you will 
disown me three times." And he broke down and wept.

LUK 8:25  "Where is your faith?" he asked his disciples. In fear and 
amazement they asked one another, "Who is this? He commands even the winds 
and the water, and they obey him."

22:54  Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of 
the high priest. Peter followed at a distance.

55  But when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had 
sat down together, Peter sat down with them.

56  A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked 
closely at him and said, "This man was with him."

57  But he denied it. "Woman, I don't know him," he said.

58  A little later someone else saw him and said, "You also are one of 
them." "Man, I am not!" Peter replied.

59  About an hour later another asserted, "Certainly this fellow was with 
him, for he is a Galilean."

60  Peter replied, "Man, I don't know what you're talking about!" Just as 
he was speaking, the rooster crowed.

JOH 6:19  When they had rowed three or three and a half miles, they saw 
Jesus approaching the boat, walking on the water; and they were terrified.

9:22  His parents said this because they were afraid of the Jews, for 
already the Jews had decided that anyone who acknowledged that Jesus was 
the Christ would be put out of the synagogue.

12:42  Yet at the same time many even among the leaders believed in him. 
But because of the Pharisees they would not confess their faith for fear 
they would be put out of the synagogue;

43  for they loved praise from men more than praise from God.

18:16  but Peter had to wait outside at the door. The other disciple, who 
was known to the high priest, came back, spoke to the girl on duty there 
and brought Peter in.

17  "You are not one of his disciples, are you?" the girl at the door asked 
Peter. He replied, "I am not."

25  As Simon Peter stood warming himself, he was asked, "You are not one of 
his disciples, are you?" He denied it, saying, "I am not."

27  Again Peter denied it, and at that moment a rooster began to crow.

19:12  From then on, Pilate tried to set Jesus free, but the Jews kept 
shouting, "If you let this man go, you are no friend of Caesar. Anyone who 
claims to be a king opposes Caesar."

13  When Pilate heard this, he brought Jesus out and sat down on the 
judge's seat at a place known as the Stone Pavement (which in Aramaic is 
Gabbatha).

14  It was the day of Preparation of Passover Week, about the sixth hour. 
"Here is your king," Pilate said to the Jews.

15  But they shouted, "Take him away! Take him away! Crucify him!" "Shall I 
crucify your king?" Pilate asked. "We have no king but Caesar," the chief 
priests answered.

16  Finally Pilate handed him over to them to be crucified. So the soldiers 
took charge of Jesus.

ACT 16:27  The jailer woke up, and when he saw the prison doors open, he 
drew his sword and was about to kill himself because he thought the 
prisoners had escaped.

GAL 2:11  When Peter came to Antioch, I opposed him to his face, because he 
was clearly in the wrong.

12  Before certain men came from James, he used to eat with the Gentiles. 
But when they arrived, he began to draw back and separate himself from the 
Gentiles because he was afraid of those who belonged to the circumcision 
group.

13  The other Jews joined him in his hypocrisy, so that by their hypocrisy 
even Barnabas was led astray.

14  When I saw that they were not acting in line with the truth of the 
gospel, I said to Peter in front of them all, "You are a Jew, yet you live 
like a Gentile and not like a Jew. How is it, then, that you force Gentiles 
to follow Jewish customs?
