HUMILITY Taken from the HOLY BIBLE: NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION (C) 1978 by the New York Bible Society, used by permission of Zondervan Bible Publishers. JOB 22:29 When men are brought low and you say, 'Lift them up!' then he will save the downcast. PSA 9:12 For he who avenges blood remembers; he does not ignore the cry of the afflicted. 10:17 You hear, O LORD, the desire of the afflicted; you encourage them, and you listen to their cry, 22:26 The poor will eat and be satisfied; they who seek the LORD will praise him--may your hearts live forever! 25:9 He guides the humble in what is right and teaches them his way. 37:11 But the meek will inherit the land and enjoy great peace. 69:32 The poor will see and be glad--you who seek God, may your hearts live! 86:1 Hear, O LORD, and answer me, for I am poor and needy. 131:1 My heart is not proud, O LORD, my eyes are not haughty; I do not concern myself with great matters or things too wonderful for me. 138:6 Though the LORD is on high, he looks upon the lowly, but the proud he knows from afar. 147:6 The LORD sustains the humble but casts the wicked to the ground. 149:4 For the LORD takes delight in his people; he crowns the humble with salvation. PRO 3:34 He mocks proud mockers but gives grace to the humble. 10:8 The wise in heart accept commands, but a chattering fool comes to ruin. 11:2 When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. 15:33 The fear of the LORD teaches a man wisdom, and humility comes before honor. 16:19 Better to be lowly in spirit and among the oppressed than to share plunder with the proud. 18:12 Before his downfall a man's heart is proud, but humility comes before honor. 22:4 Humility and the fear of the LORD bring wealth and honor and life. 27:2 Let another praise you, and not your own mouth; someone else, and not your own lips. 29:23 A man's pride brings him low, but a man of lowly spirit gains honor. 30:32 "If you have played the fool and exalted yourself, or if you have planned evil, clap your hand over your mouth! ECC 5:2 Do not be quick with your mouth, do not be hasty in your heart to utter anything before God. God is in heaven and you are on earth, so let your words be few. ISA 29:19 Once more the humble will rejoice in the LORD; the needy will rejoice in the Holy One of Israel. 51:1 "Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness and who seek the LORD: Look to the rock from which you were cut and to the quarry from which you were hewn; 57:15 For this is what the high and lofty One says--he who lives forever, whose name is holy: "I live in a high and holy place, but also with him who is contrite and lowly in spirit, to revive the spirit of the lowly and to revive the heart of the contrite. 66:2 Has not my hand made all these things, and so they came into being?" declares the LORD. "This is the one I esteem: he who is humble and contrite in spirit, and trembles at my word. JER 45:5 Should you then seek great things for yourself? Seek them not. For I will bring disaster on all people, declares the LORD, but wherever you go I will let you escape with your life.'" EZE 16:63 Then, when I make atonement for you for all you have done, you will remember and be ashamed and never again open your mouth because of your humiliation, declares the Sovereign LORD.'" MIC 6:8 He has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the LORD require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God. MAT 5:3 "Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. 11:29 Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. 18:3 And he said: "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. 4 Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven. 20:26 Not so with you. Instead, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant, 23:12 For whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted. LUK 1:52 He has brought down rulers from their thrones but has lifted up the humble. 6:20 Looking at his disciples, he said: "Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. 10:21 At that time Jesus, full of joy through the Holy Spirit, said, "I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and learned, and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your good pleasure. 14:10 But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, 'Friend, move up to a better place.' Then you will be honored in the presence of all your fellow guests. 17:10 So you also, when you have done everything you were told to do, should say, 'We are unworthy servants; we have only done our duty.'" 18:13 "But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, 'God, have mercy on me, a sinner.' 14 "I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God. For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted." 22:26 But you are not to be like that. Instead, the greatest among you should be like the youngest, and the one who rules like the one who serves. 27 For who is greater, the one who is at the table or the one who serves? Is it not the one who is at the table? But I am among you as one who serves. JOH 13:14 Now that I, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also should wash one another's feet. ROM 11:20 Granted. But they were broken off because of unbelief, and you stand by faith. Do not be arrogant, but be afraid. 12:3 For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the measure of faith God has given you. 10 Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud, but be willing to associate with people of low position. Do not be conceited. 1CO 1:28 He chose the lowly things of this world and the despised things-- and the things that are not--to nullify the things that are, 3:18 Do not deceive yourselves. If any one of you thinks he is wise by the standards of this age, he should become a "fool" so that he may become wise. 10:12 So, if you think you are standing firm, be careful that you don't fall! 13:4 Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. 2CO 11:30 If I must boast, I will boast of the things that show my weakness. 12:6 Even if I should choose to boast, I would not be a fool, because I would be speaking the truth. But I refrain, so no one will think more of me than is warranted by what I do or say. 10 That is why, for Christ's sake, I delight in weaknesses, in insults, in hardships, in persecutions, in difficulties. For when I am weak, then I am strong. GAL 5:26 Let us not become conceited, provoking and envying each other. 6:14 May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world. EPH 4:2 Be completely humble and gentle; be patient, bearing with one another in love. 5:21 Submit to one another out of reverence for Christ. PHI 2:3 Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. 4 Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others. 5 Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: 6 Who, being in very nature God, did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, 7 but made himself nothing, taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death-- even death on a cross! 9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place and gave him the name that is above every name, 10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, 11 and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father. COL 3:12 Therefore, as God's chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. JAM 1:9 The brother in humble circumstances ought to take pride in his high position. 3:1 Not many of you should presume to be teachers, my brothers, because you know that we who teach will be judged more strictly. 4:6 But he gives us more grace. That is why Scripture says: "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." 1PE 5:5 Young men, in the same way be submissive to those who are older. All of you, clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because, "God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble." 6 Humble yourselves, therefore, under God's mighty hand, that he may lift you up in due time.
