SPEACH Taken from the HOLY BIBLE: NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION (C) 1978 by the New York Bible Society, used by permission of Zondervan Bible Publishers. EXO 22:28 "Do not blaspheme God or curse the ruler of your people. JOB 13:5 If only you would be altogether silent! For you, that would be wisdom. 16:3 Will your long-winded speeches never end? What ails you that you keep on arguing? 4 I also could speak like you, if you were in my place; I could make fine speeches against you and shake my head at you. 5 But my mouth would encourage you; comfort from my lips would bring you relief. 19:18 Even the little boys scorn me; when I appear, they ridicule me. 27:4 my lips will not speak wickedness, and my tongue will utter no deceit. 38:2 "Who is this that darkens my counsel with words without knowledge? PSA 10:7 His mouth is full of curses and lies and threats; trouble and evil are under his tongue. 8 He lies in wait near the villages; from ambush he murders the innocent, watching in secret for his victims. 12:3 May the LORD cut off all flattering lips and every boastful tongue 4 that says, "We will triumph with our tongues; we own our lips--who is our master?" 15:1 LORD, who may dwell in your sanctuary? Who may live on your holy hill? 2 He whose walk is blameless and who does what is righteous, who speaks the truth from his heart 3 and has no slander on his tongue, who does his neighbor no wrong and casts no slur on his fellow man, 34:13 keep your tongue from evil and your lips from speaking lies. 35:21 They gape at me and say, "Aha! Aha! With our own eyes we have seen it." 37:30 The mouth of the righteous man utters wisdom, and his tongue speaks what is just. 39:1 I said, "I will watch my ways and keep my tongue from sin; I will put a muzzle on my mouth as long as the wicked are in my presence." 41:5 My enemies say of me in malice, "When will he die and his name perish?" 6 Whenever one comes to see me, he speaks falsely, while his heart gathers slander; then he goes out and spreads it abroad. 7 All my enemies whisper together against me; they imagine the worst for me, saying, 8 "A vile disease has beset him; he will never get up from the place where he lies." 9 Even my close friend, whom I trusted, he who shared my bread, has lifted up his heel against me. 50:23 He who sacrifices thank offerings honors me, and he prepares the way so that I may show him the salvation of God." 52:2 Your tongue plots destruction; it is like a sharpened razor, you who practice deceit. 3 You love evil rather than good, falsehood rather than speaking the truth. Selah 4 You love every harmful word, O you deceitful tongue! 59:12 For the sins of their mouths, for the words of their lips, let them be caught in their pride. For the curses and lies they utter, 64:2 Hide me from the conspiracy of the wicked, from that noisy crowd of evildoers. 3 They sharpen their tongues like swords and aim their words like deadly arrows. 4 They shoot from ambush at the innocent man; they shoot at him suddenly, without fear. 5 They encourage each other in evil plans, they talk about hiding their snares; they say, "Who will see them?" 69:12 Those who sit at the gate mock me, and I am the song of the drunkards. 26 For they persecute those you wound and talk about the pain of those you hurt. 70:3 May those who say to me, "Aha! Aha!" turn back because of their shame. 77:12 I will meditate on all your works and consider all your mighty deeds. 102:8 All day long my enemies taunt me; those who rail against me use my name as a curse. 106:33 for they rebelled against the Spirit of God, and rash words came from Moses' lips. 119:13 With my lips I recount all the laws that come from your mouth. 23 Though rulers sit together and slander me, your servant will meditate on your decrees. 27 Let me understand the teaching of your precepts; then I will meditate on your wonders. 46 I will speak of your statutes before kings and will not be put to shame, 54 Your decrees are the theme of my song wherever I lodge. 172 May my tongue sing of your word, for all your commands are righteous. 120:1 I call on the LORD in my distress, and he answers me. 2 Save me, O LORD, from lying lips and from deceitful tongues. 3 What will he do to you, and what more besides, O deceitful tongue? 4 He will punish you with a warrior's sharp arrows, with burning coals of the broom tree. 5 Woe to me that I dwell in Meshech, that I live among the tents of Kedar! 6 Too long have I lived among those who hate peace. 7 I am a man of peace; but when I speak, they are for war. 140:3 They make their tongues as sharp as a serpent's; the poison of vipers is on their lips. Selah 11 Let slanderers not be established in the land; may disaster hunt down men of violence. 141:3 Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips. 145:5 They will speak of the glorious splendor of your majesty, and I will meditate on your wonderful works. 6 They will tell of the power of your awesome works, and I will proclaim your great deeds. 7 They will celebrate your abundant goodness and joyfully sing of your righteousness. 11 They will tell of the glory of your kingdom and speak of your might, 12 so that all men may know of your mighty acts and the glorious splendor of your kingdom. PRO 4:24 Put away perversity from your mouth; keep corrupt talk far from your lips. 6:16 There are six things the LORD hates, seven that are detestable to him: 17 haughty eyes, a lying tongue, hands that shed innocent blood, 18 a heart that devises wicked schemes, feet that are quick to rush into evil, 19 a false witness who pours out lies and a man who stirs up dissension among brothers. 8:13 To fear the LORD is to hate evil; I hate pride and arrogance, evil behavior and perverse speech. 10:11 The mouth of the righteous is a fountain of life, but violence overwhelms the mouth of the wicked. 12 Hatred stirs up dissension, but love covers over all wrongs. 13 Wisdom is found on the lips of the discerning, but a rod is for the back of him who lacks judgment. 14 Wise men store up knowledge, but the mouth of a fool invites ruin. 19 When words are many, sin is not absent, but he who holds his tongue is wise. 20 The tongue of the righteous is choice silver, but the heart of the wicked is of little value. 21 The lips of the righteous nourish many, but fools die for lack of judgment. 31 The mouth of the righteous brings forth wisdom, but a perverse tongue will be cut out. 32 The lips of the righteous know what is fitting, but the mouth of the wicked only what is perverse. 11:11 Through the blessing of the upright a city is exalted, but by the mouth of the wicked it is destroyed. 12 A man who lacks judgment derides his neighbor, but a man of understanding holds his tongue. 13 A gossip betrays a confidence, but a trustworthy man keeps a secret. 14 For lack of guidance a nation falls, but many advisers make victory sure. 12:5 The plans of the righteous are just, but the advice of the wicked is deceitful. 6 The words of the wicked lie in wait for blood, but the speech of the upright rescues them. 13 An evil man is trapped by his sinful talk, but a righteous man escapes trouble. 14 From the fruit of his lips a man is filled with good things as surely as the work of his hands rewards him. 16 A fool shows his annoyance at once, but a prudent man overlooks an insult. 17 A truthful witness gives honest testimony, but a false witness tells lies. 18 Reckless words pierce like a sword, but the tongue of the wise brings healing. 19 Truthful lips endure forever, but a lying tongue lasts only a moment. 20 There is deceit in the hearts of those who plot evil, but joy for those who promote peace. 23 A prudent man keeps his knowledge to himself, but the heart of fools blurts out folly. 13:2 From the fruit of his lips a man enjoys good things, but the unfaithful have a craving for violence. 3 He who guards his lips guards his life, but he who speaks rashly will come to ruin. 14:3 A fool's talk brings a rod to his back, but the lips of the wise protect them. 25 A truthful witness saves lives, but a false witness is deceitful. 15:1 A gentle answer turns away wrath, but a harsh word stirs up anger. 2 The tongue of the wise commends knowledge, but the mouth of the fool gushes folly. 4 The tongue that brings healing is a tree of life, but a deceitful tongue crushes the spirit. 7 The lips of the wise spread knowledge; not so the hearts of fools. 14 The discerning heart seeks knowledge, but the mouth of a fool feeds on folly. 23 A man finds joy in giving an apt reply--and how good is a timely word! 26 The LORD detests the thoughts of the wicked, but those of the pure are pleasing to him. 28 The heart of the righteous weighs its answers, but the mouth of the wicked gushes evil. 16:21 The wise in heart are called discerning, and pleasant words promote instruction. 23 A wise man's heart guides his mouth, and his lips promote instruction. 24 Pleasant words are a honeycomb, sweet to the soul and healing to the bones. 27 A scoundrel plots evil, and his speech is like a scorching fire. 28 A perverse man stirs up dissension, and a gossip separates close friends. 17:4 A wicked man listens to evil lips; a liar pays attention to a malicious tongue. 7 Arrogant lips are unsuited to a fool-- how much worse lying lips to a ruler! 9 He who covers over an offense promotes love, but whoever repeats the matter separates close friends. 20 A man of perverse heart does not prosper; he whose tongue is deceitful falls into trouble. 27 A man of knowledge uses words with restraint, and a man of understanding is even-tempered. 28 Even a fool is thought wise if he keeps silent, and discerning if he holds his tongue. 18:4 The words of a man's mouth are deep waters, but the fountain of wisdom is a bubbling brook. 6 A fool's lips bring him strife, and his mouth invites a beating. 7 A fool's mouth is his undoing, and his lips are a snare to his soul. 8 The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to a man's inmost parts. 13 He who answers before listening--that is his folly and his shame. 20 From the fruit of his mouth a man's stomach is filled; with the harvest from his lips he is satisfied. 21 The tongue has the power of life and death, and those who love it will eat its fruit. 23 A poor man pleads for mercy, but a rich man answers harshly. 19:1 Better a poor man whose walk is blameless than a fool whose lips are perverse. 22 What a man desires is unfailing love; better to be poor than a liar. 28 A corrupt witness mocks at justice, and the mouth of the wicked gulps down evil. 20:15 Gold there is, and rubies in abundance, but lips that speak knowledge are a rare jewel. 21:23 He who guards his mouth and his tongue keeps himself from calamity. 22:11 He who loves a pure heart and whose speech is gracious will have the king for his friend. 24:2 for their hearts plot violence, and their lips talk about making trouble. 6 for waging war you need guidance, and for victory many advisers. 25:11 A word aptly spoken is like apples of gold in settings of silver. 15 Through patience a ruler can be persuaded, and a gentle tongue can break a bone. 23 As a north wind brings rain, so a sly tongue brings angry looks. 26:5 Answer a fool according to his folly, or he will be wise in his own eyes. 20 Without wood a fire goes out; without gossip a quarrel dies down. 21 As charcoal to embers and as wood to fire, so is a quarrelsome man for kindling strife. 22 The words of a gossip are like choice morsels; they go down to a man's inmost parts. 23 Like a coating of glaze over earthenware are fervent lips with an evil heart. 28 A lying tongue hates those it hurts, and a flattering mouth works ruin. 29:11 A fool gives full vent to his anger, but a wise man keeps himself under control. 20 Do you see a man who speaks in haste? There is more hope for a fool than for him. 30:10 "Do not slander a servant to his master, or he will curse you, and you will pay for it. 31:26 She speaks with wisdom, and faithful instruction is on her tongue. ECC 3:7 a time to tear and a time to mend, a time to be silent and a time to speak, 5:3 As a dream comes when there are many cares, so the speech of a fool when there are many words. 7 Much dreaming and many words are meaningless. Therefore stand in awe of God. 7:22 for you know in your heart that many times you yourself have cursed others. 9:17 The quiet words of the wise are more to be heeded than the shouts of a ruler of fools. 10:11 If a snake bites before it is charmed, there is no profit for the charmer. 12 Words from a wise man's mouth are gracious, but a fool is consumed by his own lips. 13 At the beginning his words are folly; at the end they are wicked madness-- 14 and the fool multiplies words. No one knows what is coming--who can tell him what will happen after him? 20 Do not revile the king even in your thoughts, or curse the rich in your bedroom, because a bird of the air may carry your words, and a bird on the wing may report what you say. 12:9 Not only was the Teacher wise, but also he imparted knowledge to the people. He pondered and searched out and set in order many proverbs. 10 The Teacher searched to find just the right words, and what he wrote was upright and true. 11 The words of the wise are like goads, their collected sayings like firmly embedded nails--given by one Shepherd. ISA 6:5 "Woe to me!" I cried. "I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty." 32:6 For the fool speaks folly, his mind is busy with evil: He practices ungodliness and spreads error concerning the LORD; the hungry he leaves empty and from the thirsty he withholds water. 7 The scoundrel's methods are wicked, he makes up evil schemes to destroy the poor with lies, even when the plea of the needy is just. JER 20:10 I hear many whispering, "Terror on every side! Report him! Let's report him!" All my friends are waiting for me to slip, saying, "Perhaps he will be deceived; then we will prevail over him and take our revenge on him." AMO 5:13 Therefore the prudent man keeps quiet in such times, for the times are evil. ZEP 3:13 The remnant of Israel will do no wrong; they will speak no lies, nor will deceit be found in their mouths. They will eat and lie down and no one will make them afraid." ZEC 8:16 These are the things you are to do: Speak the truth to each other, and render true and sound judgment in your courts; MAT 5:22 But I tell you that anyone who is angry with his brother will be subject to judgment. Again, anyone who says to his brother, 'Raca,' is answerable to the Sanhedrin. But anyone who says, 'You fool!' will be in danger of the fire of hell. 37 Simply let your 'Yes' be 'Yes,' and your 'No,' 'No'; anything beyond this comes from the evil one. 12:34 You brood of vipers, how can you who are evil say anything good? For out of the overflow of the heart the mouth speaks. 35 The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. 36 But I tell you that men will have to give account on the day of judgment for every careless word they have spoken. 37 For by your words you will be acquitted, and by your words you will be condemned." LUK 6:45 The good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and the evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks. ACT 23:5 Paul replied, "Brothers, I did not realize that he was the high priest; for it is written: 'Do not speak evil about the ruler of your people.'" ROM 1:29 They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit and malice. They are gossips, 30 slanderers, God-haters, insolent, arrogant and boastful; they invent ways of doing evil; they disobey their parents; 3:13 "Their throats are open graves; their tongues practice deceit." "The poison of vipers is on their lips." 14 "Their mouths are full of cursing and bitterness." 1CO 6:10 nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God. EPH 4:22 You were taught, with regard to your former way of life, to put off your old self, which is being corrupted by its deceitful desires; 25 Therefore each of you must put off falsehood and speak truthfully to his neighbor, for we are all members of one body. 29 Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen. 31 Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice. 5:4 Nor should there be obscenity, foolish talk or coarse joking, which are out of place, but rather thanksgiving. PHI 1:27 Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in one spirit, contending as one man for the faith of the gospel COL 4:6 Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone. TIT 1:10 For there are many rebellious people, mere talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision group. 11 They must be silenced, because they are ruining whole households by teaching things they ought not to teach--and that for the sake of dishonest gain. 3:2 to slander no one, to be peaceable and considerate, and to show true humility toward all men. JAM 1:19 My dear brothers, take note of this: Everyone should be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to become angry, 26 If anyone considers himself religious and yet does not keep a tight rein on his tongue, he deceives himself and his religion is worthless. 3:2 We all stumble in many ways. If anyone is never at fault in what he says, he is a perfect man, able to keep his whole body in check. 5 Likewise the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. 6 The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body. It corrupts the whole person, sets the whole course of his life on fire, and is itself set on fire by hell. 8 but no man can tame the tongue. It is a restless evil, full of deadly poison. 9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God's likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. 13 Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show it by his good life, by deeds done in the humility that comes from wisdom. 4:11 Brothers, do not slander one another. Anyone who speaks against his brother or judges him speaks against the law and judges it. When you judge the law, you are not keeping it, but sitting in judgment on it. 1PE 2:1 Therefore, rid yourselves of all malice and all deceit, hypocrisy, envy, and slander of every kind. 12 Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day he visits us. 3:9 Do not repay evil with evil or insult with insult, but with blessing, because to this you were called so that you may inherit a blessing. 10 For, "Whoever would love life and see good days must keep his tongue from evil and his lips from deceitful speech. 15 But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 16 keeping a clear conscience, so that those who speak maliciously against your good behavior in Christ may be ashamed of their slander. 2PE 2:7 and if he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the filthy lives of lawless men 8 (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)-- 10 This is especially true of those who follow the corrupt desire of the sinful nature and despise authority. Bold and arrogant, these men are not afraid to slander celestial beings; JUD 1:8 In the very same way, these dreamers pollute their own bodies, reject authority and slander celestial beings. REV 14:5 No lie was found in their mouths; they are blameless.
