WORK Taken from the HOLY BIBLE: NEW INTERNATIONAL VERSION (C) 1978 by the New York Bible Society, used by permission of Zondervan Bible Publishers. Genesis 2:15 The LORD God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it. Exodus 23:12 "Six days do your work, but on the seventh day do not work, so that your ox and your donkey may rest and the slave born in your household, and the alien as well, may be refreshed. 35:2 For six days, work is to be done, but the seventh day shall be your holy day, a Sabbath of rest to the LORD. Whoever does any work on it must be put to death. Deuteronomy 5:13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, Proverbs 10:4 Lazy hands make a man poor, but diligent hands bring wealth. 5 He who gathers crops in summer is a wise son, but he who sleeps during harvest is a disgraceful son. 12:11 He who works his land will have abundant food, but he who chases fantasies lacks judgment. 24 Diligent hands will rule, but laziness ends in slave labor. 27 The lazy man does not roast his game, but the diligent man prizes his possessions. 13:4 The sluggard craves and gets nothing, but the desires of the diligent are fully satisfied. 11 Dishonest money dwindles away, but he who gathers money little by little makes it grow. 23 A poor man's field may produce abundant food, but injustice sweeps it away. 14:4 Where there are no oxen, the manger is empty, but from the strength of an ox comes an abundant harvest. 23 All hard work brings a profit, but mere talk leads only to poverty. 16:26 The laborer's appetite works for him; his hunger drives him on. 20:13 Do not love sleep or you will grow poor; stay awake and you will have food to spare. 21:5 The plans of the diligent lead to profit as surely as haste leads to poverty. 22:29 Do you see a man skilled in his work? He will serve before kings; he will not serve before obscure men. 27:23 Be sure you know the condition of your flocks, give careful attention to your herds; 28:19 He who works his land will have abundant food, but the one who chases fantasies will have his fill of poverty. 30:25 Ants are creatures of little strength, yet they store up their food in the summer; 26 coneys are creatures of little power, yet they make their home in the crags; 31:27 She watches over the affairs of her household and does not eat the bread of idleness. Ecclesiastes 1:3 What does man gain from all his labor at which he toils under the sun? 2:10 I denied myself nothing my eyes desired; I refused my heart no pleasure. My heart took delight in all my work, and this was the reward for all my labor. 11 Yet when I surveyed all that my hands had done and what I had toiled to achieve, everything was meaningless, a chasing after the wind; nothing was gained under the sun. 17 So I hated life, because the work that is done under the sun was grievous to me. All of it is meaningless, a chasing after the wind. 18 I hated all the things I had toiled for under the sun, because I must leave them to the one who comes after me. 19 And who knows whether he will be a wise man or a fool? Yet he will have control over all the work into which I have poured my effort and skill under the sun. This too is meaningless. 20 So my heart began to despair over all my toilsome labor under the sun. 21 For a man may do his work with wisdom, knowledge and skill, and then he must leave all he owns to someone who has not worked for it. This too is meaningless and a great misfortune. 22 What does a man get for all the toil and anxious striving with which he labors under the sun? 9:10 Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might, for in the grave, where you are going, there is neither working nor planning nor knowledge nor wisdom. 11:4 Whoever watches the wind will not plant; whoever looks at the clouds will not reap. 6 Sow your seed in the morning, and at evening let not your hands be idle, for you do not know which will succeed, whether this or that, or whether both will do equally well. Romans 12:11 Never be lacking in zeal, but keep your spiritual fervor, serving the Lord. Ephesians 4:28 He who has been stealing must steal no longer, but must work, doing something useful with his own hands, that he may have something to share with those in need. 1 Thessalonians 4:11 Make it your ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind your own business and to work with your hands, just as we told you, 12 so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody. 2 Thessalonians 3:10 For even when we were with you, we gave you this rule: "If a man will not work, he shall not eat." 11 We hear that some among you are idle. They are not busy; they are busybodies. 12 Such people we command and urge in the Lord Jesus Christ to settle down and earn the bread they eat. 1 Timothy 5:8 If anyone does not provide for his relatives, and especially for his immediate family, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.
