Questioner

How would you start reading the Bible? Would you start at Genesis and just keep going?  Right now, I'm jumping all around and don't understand anything or follow it.

Answer

You should read the Bible "Systematically" that is, have a system. Here's what I use to ensure that I read the Bible over and over and have a balance:

Each Day I read:

1. The Proverb of the day - that is, whatever day of the month is, that's the Proverb I read. For example, today it is the 9th, so I read Proverbs, chapter 9.

2. I read a section of Psalm 119 each day. Psalm 119 is broken down into 22 sections, one for each letter of the Hebrew alphabet. When you read the last section, then start over the next day at section one.

3. I read a Psalm each day, starting at Psalm 1 and going to Psalm 150, and then starting over again. I skip Psalm 119, since I read a section of it each day (#2).

4. I read two chapters of the Old Testament each day, starting at Genesis 1, and going all the way to Malachi 4, and then starting over again. Also, omitting Psalms and Proverbs, since I read them in #1, #2, and #3 above.

5. I read three chapters of the New Testament each day, starting in Matthew and going all the way to the end of the Book of Revelation, and then starting over again.

This is what I do. It will take about 45 minutes a day, and I read only to hear the Living and Active Word of God. I always ask God to work in my heart and give me understanding of His will for my life.

If you do this you will:

1. Read through the Book of Proverbs, 12 times a year.
2. Read through Psalm 119, 16 times a year.
3. Read through the Book of Psalms, 2.4 times a year.
4. Read through the entire Old Testament, once a year.
5. Read through the entire New Testament, 3.4 times a year.

If you do what I do (or something like it), then you will become wise and discerning in the the Word and will of God, and your life will be blessed and useful for the Lord. You will be delighting in the lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart:

Psa. 37:4 "Delight yourself in the LORD and he will give you the desires of your heart."
