Question

I would like to know what is the best literal version of the Bible to purchase?

Answer

There are various "literal" versions of the Bible, that is "direct translations" from the original languages to our English language.  Of course the KJV is the oldest one in common use. Also, the New International Version (NIV), is a 1978 English version in the common language of the people.  The New American Standard Bible (NASB) is another late 70's version that was nicely done.  The NKJV is an updated KJV but in more modern English.

All of these Bibles are the Word of God!  None is to be slighted, and thought to be less than the Word of God.  They have different English terms, but they all convey the truth.  Yes, some are more accurate than others, based on the newest manuscripts being used, and the better understanding of the original languages and other discoveries (Dead Sea Scrolls).

I used the NIV for personal reading, but also use the MacArthur Study Bible (NKJV) because of the almost 30 years worth of John MacArthur's study on nearly every passage.  His study notes are invaluable.  God gives the Church pastors and teachers to help the saints learn the true meaning of the passages, and John is that wonderful pastor and teacher for this generation.
